The Great Wheelbarrow Race

Shared by Nikola Wilkie, AIM Star Sapphire Director

From Chillagoe to Mareeba it’s 139 km and in those parts of Queensland, Australia, it doesn’t rain too often but it did the day before The Great Wheelbarrow Race, an annual fundraiser. Leading out from Chillagoe a long stretch of the road is not sealed and 42 teams of runners negotiated the mud with wheelbarrow in hand for almost a full day.  There’s nothing actually in the wheelbarrow but it’s being pushed for a good cause.  There usually is a good cause behind an insane act like this pushing an empty wheelbarrow for three days.

Over 400 participants pushed to raise money for their chosen charity.  At the end of a hard run of at least a 35 km most went to sleep in their swag on the ground, thankfully there was a clear sky.

I’m not that crazy as to run behind a barrow but I was there to support my team of ten by working on their bodies to keep them able for the next day’s run.  A Recovery Team of six worked on bodies for 6-8 hours using Australian muscle-releasing techniques Bowen and Emmett.  Putting tired feet in a bath of AIM CWR was the first relief, and rubbing AIM Mag-nificence magnesium lotion into legs was very welcome.

Our team were well backed with AIM products.  On board the bus the runners were primed with Red Rush nitric oxide boost at the beginning of the day and kept going with Peak Endurance.  Taylor, my son, was the source of encouragement.  Through his training he knows how valuable the products are for everyone wanting stamina.

The task is to run just 10-15 seconds pushing the wheelbarrow, the driver of the bus toots the horn at the command of the timer, the next runner jumps out of the moving vehicle and takes over pushing.  Of course it is in the teams best interest to keep that barrow moving but taking control of a moving barrow is no easy feat. The first runner then jumps back on board the still moving vehicle and finds a seat whilst the next runner lines up to jump out.

Thanks to AIM Australia’s contribution to us we were able to raise over $2,000 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
