Well-Fed Eyes

If you are what you eat and the eyes are the windows to the soul, nutrition can affect just how clearly you see through your windows.

The cornea of the eye can be likened to a window letting in light that is transformed into vision, images produced on the retina.

As the inner lining of the eye, the retina contains around 127 million light receptors: cones that produce colors and rods that adjust the contrast between light and dark.

Looking at the cellular level of the retina reveals the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), a very thin layer of cube-like cells beneath the cones and rods. RPE cells channel oxygen and nutrients to these light receptors as well as recycle nutrients and remove waste.

The relationship between RPE cells and light receptors is crucial to eye health. And the right kind of nutrition is vital to keeping this relationship healthy.

Poor Nutrition Can Lead to Vision Loss

A 2019 study published in the Molecular Nutrition & Food Research journal determined that unhealthy diets can result in oxidative stress and impaired function of the retinal pigment epithelium. In other words, the wrong food can negatively alter vision at the cellular level.

Just like a clogged colon lined with impacted waste from poor nutrition, a similar effect can happen in the retina as a result of not eating well. The retinal pigment epithelium becomes unable to effectively detoxify the visual center of the eye.

A leading cause of vision loss is age-related macular degeneration (AMD), affecting the central part of the retina. AMD onset is caused by damage to retinal pigment epithelial cells. But there is nutritional protection from such eye issues.

A Few Eye-Healthy Nutrients

According to the American Optometric Association, a variety of antioxidant compounds that include beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin can help to prevent AMD or slow its progression. These carotenoids build and maintain the thickness of the retinal pigment epithelium, so they should be a regular part of a healthy diet.

A 2017 study found that although RPE cells consume a number of different nutrients, the amino acid proline tops the list. It seems that this nonessential amino acid—meaning the body can produce it—is essential for the retinal pigment epithelium. Besides, if you are sick or under stress, your body may not be able to produce enough.

Omega-3 essential fatty acids have been shown to provide vision protection, and flaxseed oil delivers a plant-based source.

∞∞∞

The key ingredient for a healthy body is wholesome food because that is where you get the bulk of the nutrients your cells need to maintain physical and mental well-being. And so it follows that what’s good for the body is healthy for the visual system.

Healthy Vision AIM

AIM has always promoted the fine idea of eating well, along with providing whole-food concentrates and targeted supplements to further increase the intake of natural nutrients that support overall body health, including the visual system.

The finest natural nutrients come from food that grows out of the earth. AIM harnessed a concentration of that goodness in whole-food powders. For example, Just Carrots and LeafGreens support eye health with nutrients such as beta-carotene and lutein.

One of the many amino acids in ProPeas is proline, the preferred food of the RPE cells that literally feed and detoxify the eyes.

As a targeted supplement, GinkgoSense supports blood flow to the extremities and contains the antioxidant compounds lutein and zeaxanthin.

For plant-based omega-3, AIMega delivers an organic source of this essential fatty acid from flaxseed oil.

Supplementing a healthy diet with AIM products such as these helps to ensure a steady supply of eye-healthy nutrients.

Generations of Nutrition

Shared by AIM Directors Heidi and Mike Toft

How many of your family members are AIM nutritional product users? In my family, I love the fact that we have four generations enjoying the AIM products.

My parents introduced us to The AIM Companies™ in 1998, when my father was diagnosed with lymphoma. They still promote their favorite products, loving it when people find renewed energy, lowered blood pressure and reduced pain.

My 96-year-old grandmother faithfully takes BarleyLife capsules and ProPeas. When our children reached six months old, they loved having BarleyLife on a spoon with some juice to wash it down. Our son now has his AIM stash at college.

My niece, a senior in a college nursing program, sends me selfies of her espresso and CoCoa LeafGreens concoctions. My brother and sister also have their favorites and often share AIM with their friends and coworkers. We are truly an AIM Family!

In addition to the AIM products tasting good and creating positive changes in our health, I believe there are more good reasons why it’s possible for people from 96 all the way down to 6 months to benefit from them.

The purity of the AIM ingredients means a wide range of people can trust what they consume. AIM whole-food powders are safe for the very young. I feel good about products that don’t contain harmful pesticides and herbicides. The gluten-free products mean many of us can enjoy the nutrition we need without uncomfortable side effects.

Another reason AIM supports families is the wealth of available information. When we have questions, we can call our friendly, knowledgeable company reps at any time to get personalized answers. Product datasheets, podcasts, email updates, YouTube videos, Chrysalis Networx and the Living Well magazine ensure all Members of the AIM Family have access to product knowledge.

Lastly, I’d like to thank the leadership of AIM for being wise and judicious in their company practices and policies. The average network marketing company survives for only a few years. AIM, however, has been enriching lives since 1982.

The legacy created in our extensive AIM family is not only something to be proud of but also something to pass on to as many people as we can. AIM is a solid, safe, family-friendly company that we can rely on to be there for future generations.

It’s All About Nutrition

Looking at Health Awareness Calendars for 2019, it’s interesting to note that March stands out as Nutrition Month in the United States and Canada. It’s especially interesting for The AIM Companies™, given that this Member-driven organization is in the business of sharing “Nutrition that works!” It’s a simple yet significant catch-phrase that reflects the importance of the right kind of nutrition.

Nutritious, whole food works to maintain good health, and AIM’s high-quality, whole-food concentrates and supplements can help to take natural nutrient intake to optimal levels.

The Rise of Digestive Diseases Worldwide

On the poor nutritional side, a North American diet that includes too many processed and fast foods has undoubtably been a major factor that contributes to a variety of health problems.

A 2008 National Institutes of Health report on the burden of digestive diseases provides some convincing evidence as to what can happen when you regularly put the wrong kind of foods into your mouth: gastroesophageal reflux disease, inflammatory bowel disease, digestive cancers, etc. 1 To further illustrate the power of poor nutrition, you only have to look to changes in the Far East.

Several Asian countries whose populations had seemed to be immune are
now experiencing the onset and rise of many of these North American diseases, primarily due to the adoption of poor nutrition over the past 40 years or so. Before the transition toward industrialized societies, most people’s eating habits were healthier until modernization introduced the convenience of processed and fast foods.

A Medical Perspective

A steady diet of poor nutrition shows that a lifestyle move away from wholesome food results in poor health. Of course, there are other factors that can trigger digestive and other diseases, but, over time, dietary factors top the list.

Numerous enlightened minds in the medical profession, including Dr. Dean Ornish, founder and president the Preventive Medicine Research Institute, and Dr. Alona Pulde, co-author of The Whole Foods Diet, emphasize that lifestyle changes, with good nutrition leading the way, can make an incredibly positive difference in your well-being.

The AIM Perspective

The AIM Healthy Cell Concept™ focuses on five factors that promote healthy body cells, a key element in your overall state of health. Nutrition is the first factor, and the AIM intention of providing natural sources of supplemental nutrition is not only to get people’s health back on track but to keep it there.

Nurturing cells with easily absorbed, natural nutrients from AIM supplements can help to optimize healthy food intake, making a huge nutritional difference at the cellular level and supporting body health from the inside out.

Along with nutrition awareness, March is also the month that contains the first day of North American spring, when gardens begin to reappear after a long, cold winter. So let’s take a look at the Garden Trio: three examples of AIM “Nutrition that works!” to make cells healthy.

The Garden Trio

BarleyLife, Just Carrots and RediBeets comprise a nourishing trio of whole-food concentrates that provide an unparalleled combination of plant-based nutrients.

BarleyLife

Barley grass grows with a fibrous root system that acts like a nutritional sponge, absorbing nutrients from the soil and sending them up into sprouting green shoots. Young barley grass is believed to be the most nutritious plant on the planet, but because of its high concentration of fiber, the human digestive system is not “grass-enabled.”

AIM delivers barley’s potent greens as an edible leaf juice powder to give people easy access to its abundance of natural vitamins, minerals, enzymes, antioxidants, chlorophyll and unique plant nutrients. Nutritious, cleansing, detoxifying, alkalizing and inflammation-reducing … that’s BarleyLife.

Just Carrots and RediBeets

Carrots and beets are taproot vegetables that you can think of as units of underground food storage. Their fleshy roots absorb nutrients from the earth and keep them in what are literally protective, fibrous containers.

Like barley grass, AIM taps into the treasure of nutrients in carrots and red beets to create easily assimilated juice powders with minimal fiber.

Carrots are a very good source of beta- carotene, potassium, vitamins B6 and B7 and a variety of antioxidants and plant nutrients that support whole-body health, particularly in regard to the eyes and skin. Just Carrots delivers all the benefits of this orange taproot filled with nutrition.

Red beets store a rich source of polyphenols, betalains, enzymes, vitamins, minerals and vegetable nitrates, providing antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, circulatory and detoxification support that promotes good health and improved liver function. Each canister of RediBeets stores these nutrients and benefits, so tap into them to improve and maintain well-being.

The concentration of nutrients in the Garden Trio will provide a daily awareness of nutrition . . . and that works!

Are You Pro . . . Peas?

Protein is found pretty much everywhere in the body—hair, bone, skin, muscles, etc. The enzymes that create the vital biochemical reactions in your body and the oxygen-carrying hemoglobin that makes your blood red are proteins as well.

What’s more, you are made up of around 10,000 proteins, but your body cannot produce all the amino acids that are the building blocks of this macronutrient. That’s why a daily protein supply that includes essential amino acids is so important.

For every 20 pounds of weight, you need a dietary intake of around 7 grams of protein daily. As an example, if you weigh 150 pounds, you should be consuming about 53 grams every day. The daily maximum amount of protein in your dietary intake is 35 percent.

There is ample evidence that the source of protein you choose can affect your health negatively or positively. This is one of the reasons AIM provides ProPeas—a healthy, vegetable protein made from field peas.

Inside Protein

A variety of animal-based foods provide protein: meat, fish, eggs, to name a few. Plant-based sources include legumes, nuts and fruits.

A concern among vegetarians is not being able to get a complete protein source that provides the twenty-plus amino acids. However, eating a variety of protein-providing plants can give them everything they need.

With plant protein, you don’t get the saturated fat from red meat, which can negatively affect your health, contributing to acidity and creating a welcoming environment for disease.

ProPeas’ Alkalizing, Non-Allergenic, Vegan Protein

Supplementing your protein intake with vegan-certified ProPeas helps to avoid the acidifying effects of animal-based protein.

Like most vegetables, peas have an alkalizing effect on the body, and your body is naturally in an alkaline state. So ProPeas is a healthy way to reduce your meat intake and a healthier choice than whey or soy protein supplements.

Soy and whey (a by-product of cheese made with cow’s milk) are among the list of common 8 foods that cause allergic reactions. Peas are not a major food allergen.

Non-GMO, Gluten-Free ProPeas

Unlike peas, soy comes from crops that are mostly genetically modified organisms (GMO). ProPeas is certified Non-GMO as well as being certified gluten-free. More healthy reasons to choose ProPeas over other sources of supplemental protein.

The Full Picture

One of the fine side effects of consuming protein is that it is the nutrient that fills you up for the longest period of time, much more so that carbohydrates or fat. If you are trying to lose weight, being regularly satisfied with your food intake for lengthy periods is one of the best ways to cut down on calories and slowly but surely shed unwanted poundage.

One 16-gram serving of ProPeas adds only 60 calories, but it takes over 4 hours to digest. During that time, your body has 12 grams of healthy protein to work with, boosting your fat-burning metabolism as it is digested.

And when it comes to building lean muscle, pea protein is a perfect choice for everyone, from active bodybuilders to couch potatoes. Whether you are trying to bulk up or just trying to maintain a healthy musculature, ProPeas is up for the task. Seniors who tend to lose muscle mass as they age as a result of reduced appetites will benefit greatly from drinking smoothies made with ProPeas.

The many benefits of pea protein provide the same number of pros for supplementing with ProPeas.

Heavenly Herbs

The funny thing about people who reject natural supplements, saying they are a waste of money and do little or nothing for your body is that the synthetic drugs that they may turn to are primarily the result of using herbs for medicinal purposes for thousands of years.

That’s right. It all began with nature, and the hundreds of thousands of plant species that it provides to search among for medicinal use. In the end, modern medicine grew into the promotion of unnatural drugs, effective or otherwise.

Herbal Past and Present

Ancient times called for ancient measures when it came to dealing with medical problems. The earliest records of medical prescriptions were carved on clay tablets found in Sumer in the southern region of Mesopotamia, dating back to the seventh century BCE. Over 250 plants were referenced. Human instinct and beliefs initially guided the use of plants as medicine.

In spite of the total mystery of the human body and illnesses that affected it, over time somehow the experience of effective medicinal herbs created a body of global knowledge that remains in use in modern times. For example, Indian Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine are still being practiced because they come from thriving societies that keep this knowledge alive.

The cultures that have little or no power in the modern world receive little or no attention regarding their traditional herbal remedies. Much ancient knowledge still exists today among the rare people who continue to live in isolated, wild lands far from both modern life and diseases. The awareness of medicinal plants to treat their communities has been invaluable to their survival. And they have never even taken an aspirin.

Herbal Release

Introduced to AIM Members back in 1993, Herbal Release brought together a variety of herbs with a history of beneficial properties that greatly contribute to inner cleansing of the body. The combination of ingredients is slightly different in the U.S. formula and the Canadian formula, but they share eight effective herbs:

Barberry

North American Indians introduced early settlers to the benefits of barberry, which was believed to be effective for treating ailments such as ulcers, heartburn and stomach upset. Recent herbal knowledge recommends barberry for the liver, the blood-filtering, detoxifying and drug-metabolizing organ. Alkaloids such as berberine and berbamine are the primary active compounds of this herb.

Buckthorn

Native to western Asia, northern Africa and Europe, alder buckthorn is both an ornamental and medicinal plant that was introduced to North America in the 18th century. Since the middle ages, buckthorn has been used as a very gentle laxative. Its bile stimulating properties also make it a cholagogue, supporting liver and digestive health. The key active compounds are glucofrangulin A and B.

Cascara Sagrada

The bark of the cascara sagrada tree was originally used to treat constipation and upset stomachs by Native American Indians. They introduced this herb to Spanish explorers who gave it a name in their own language that translates as sacred bark. According to Nutrition Review, a free online resource devoted to the science of nutritional supplementation, “Cascara sagrada is considered one of the safest laxatives and can be used to restore tone to the colon, as well as being useful in detoxifying and cleansing programs.” The key active compounds in this herb are anthraquinone glycosides.

Chickweed

This herb got its common name back in the 1400s when it was first used as food for chickens, and its Latin name, Stellaria media, came from the heavens, named after its tiny, star-shaped white blossoms. For centuries, chickweed has been used as a remedy for a variety of ailments, including blood disorders, constipation and inflammation. Along with flavonoids, the presence of the anti-inflammatory glycosides rutin and saponin promote the medicinal benefits of this herb.

Dandelion

The presence of dandelions on groomed lawns indicates another weed in most people’s eyes, but this herb has been used medicinally for thousands of years. Its name originates from the French word that translates as lion’s tooth: dent-de-lion. Acting as a detoxifier, dandelion is particularly efficient for cleansing the liver. It has also been classified as a lymphatic herb, which cleanses the system that keeps the body detoxified. Dandelions contain a variety of nutrients and phytochemicals that promote detoxification and good health.

Echinacea

One of the herbs that is best known for fighting the common cold is echinacea, which boosts the immune system by producing more white blood cells. Many herbalists refer to echinacea as an effective lymphagogue that increases the flow of fluid in the lymphatic system. Compared to most other medicinal plants, echinacea has a relatively short history of use that began with the indigenous Indians of North America. Alkamides and polysaccharides are just two of the compounds in echinacea that contribute to its efficacy.

Parsley

Originating from the Mediterranean region, this herb seems to be ever-present as a garnish or ingredient for food. Long before it was consumed as part of a meal, parsley was used medicinally, most notably as a diuretic and a laxative. The high concentration of a flavonoid in parsley known as myricetin provides antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities.

Sarsaparilla

Cowboys in the Old West used to sidle up in saloon bars for a sarsaparilla drink to quench their thirsts. The medicinal side of this herb stems from its root, which has been used for hundreds of years in Asia and the Americas as a diuretic, sudorific (sweat-inducer) and tonic and in Europe as a blood purifier. Sarsaparilla’s toxin-removing properties make it particularly beneficial for cleansing the body, having high concentrations of phenolic compounds with antioxidant activity, including quercetin, phytosterols and saponins.

Combining all these botanicals into an AIM supplement created an herbal release that cleanses and supports the body and its systems in a natural way. And they are available on both sides of the US-Canada border.

AIM Nutrition Changed My Life

Shared by Tina Wilkerson, AIM Director and Personal Trainer

Back in 2001, after my daughter, Jordan, was born, I felt very poorly. I had a number of health issues: fatigue, headaches, aching joints, and I was overweight. At that point in time, I wasn’t a personal trainer yet, but I began a wellness journey that would change my life for the better and allow me to help others do the same.

The Journey

I managed to go from size 14 to 2, but, honestly, I didn’t do it in a healthy way. I wish I had had the knowledge that I have now so that I wouldn’t have taxed my body as hard as I did. I would have been able to maintain my weight in a healthy way.

During my wellness journey, I got into personal training and opened my own studio. However, the stress of starting a business and raising a daughter caught up with me. I regularly worked 12-hour days, and I was getting sick a lot and taking antibiotics probably four times a year.

Discovering AIM

Six years ago, I met Star Sapphire Director Leré Robinson, who mentored me on the use of AIM products. I started on a committed regimen of the Garden Trio, FloraFood, AIMega, Composure and Renewed Balance body cream. Within three months, I was feeling completely renewed, capable and energetic.

I credit AIM nutrition with these positive changes because I didn’t do anything else that was different. As a personal trainer, I already exercised and ate well, so it was the AIM products that really changed my life.

That’s when I started telling all of my clients about AIM, recommending products not only for losing weight but for improving all kinds of body functions. Those who come to my studio are generally middle-aged woman, many of whom have chronic pain, don’t sleep well, have poor digestive function and hormonal imbalance. Many want to improve their mobility, or what I call the “feel good” factor.

In addition to the exercise component to enhance mobility, I use AIM products to improve their wellness on an intracellular level. Addressing external factors of wellness, such as exercise (mild to moderate), sufficient sleep, sun exposure, etc., and the internal factors of eating well and supplementing with AIM products has helped a lot of my clients to get stellar results. They are able to look better, move better, feel better and be better from the inside out.

AIMing for Weight Loss

Most of my clients have weight loss goals. Last year, I ran a six-week weight-loss challenge. I had them replace their highest calorie meal of the day with a ProPeas shake. The average weight loss was eight pounds.

ProPeas and fit ’n fiber are mostly used for meal replacements, having developed a couple of recipes that include adding kale or spinach and a teaspoon of healthy oil. Almost all of my clients also use Peak Endurance for supplemental energy.

The combination of AIM products and functional exercise—movement that helps you age well—is a sustainable, balanced approach to weight loss and wellness, which I believe is healthiest after experiencing my own health journey and 14 years as a personal trainer.
At the same time, there are definitely unhealthy, unsustainable ways to lose weight. Because of my own history, I don’t encourage extreme exercise, which is not helpful and likely harmful for your body in the long run.

As men and women age, exercise can actually become counter-productive very quickly. Exercise naturally creates inflammation in the body. And if you’re an older person, overweight, have health issues, have been on a lot of meds or you haven’t moved well in a long time, then you’re already walking around with a lot of chronic, low-grade inflammation.

Increasing inflammation with the wrong kind of exercise is only going to make matters worse. And while we’re on the subject, reducing inflammation with AIM whole-food concentrates such as BarleyLife is an ideal approach to wellness. And as for exercise, you just have to move smart.

I don’t even like to use the word exercise; I just think movement. The right kind makes everything better; the wrong kind makes everything worse. Keep moving in the right way that makes you feel better and your life better.

Everything that has transpired in the 10½ years that I’ve owned Elite Personal Training has come out of my own wellness journey, just like my use of the AIM products. I will continue to promote them in my studio because they have changed my life and have been changing the lives of my clients.

Picture Perfect and Happily Healthy with Help from AIM Nutrition

Shared by George McPherson, Chairman’s Club Director

Over the years, I have dealt with a number of health problems, some far more serious than others. To this day, the AIM products have played a major role in keeping me healthy.

When Herbal Fiberblend first became available in 1988, I was dealing with painfully aggravating hemorrhoids, to the point where I had to have one of them removed. Thanks to Herbal Fiberblend, those uncomfortable issues are history.

In 2002, I was diagnosed with a deadly disease: prostate cancer. An appointment was scheduled for me to have surgery at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. At that time, the immediate medical response was to remove the prostate if the PSA appeared to be elevating.

We decided to monitor and wait, and, in the meantime, we got connected to a naturopathic doctor who felt we were on the right track to try alternatives. I started on a series of chelation therapy and homeopathic medicines along with large amounts of the AIM products … and no surgery!

Nine years later, however, I had a blockage in my bowel and had immediate surgery to remove a tumor. The surgeon sent samples of this growth to test for cancer.

A few days later, the surgeon told us that the tumor was cancerous and recommended chemotherapy. He referred me to an oncologist, who said his reports showed I was nearing stage-4 prostate cancer and suggested I be a candidate for a new trial of experimental chemo.

That’s when my wife, Muriel, stepped in and stalled for time from any further “medical” moves. Again, my naturopathic doctor treated me naturally and complimented us for taking the AIM products.

I passed the 80-year mark in March of 2018 and still enjoy good health. I continue to take the Garden Trio, AIMega, Frame Essentials, PrepZymes, fit ’n fiber mixed with Herbal Fiberblend, which tastes good, along with a few others.

Now the route that we took to deal with prostate cancer the past 16 years may not be the answer for everybody, but it sure has worked for me.

Testimonials should not be construed as representing results everybody can achieve.
