Picture Perfect and Happily Healthy with Help from AIM Nutrition

Over the years, I have dealt with a number of health problems, some far more serious than others. To this day, the AIM products have played a major role in keeping me healthy.

When Herbal Fiberblend first became available in 1988, I was dealing with painfully aggravating hemorrhoids, to the point where I had to have one of them removed. Thanks to Herbal Fiberblend, those uncomfortable issues are history.

In 2002, I was diagnosed with a deadly disease: prostate cancer. An appointment was scheduled for me to have surgery at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. At that time, the immediate medical response was to remove the prostate if the PSA appeared to be elevating.

We decided to monitor and wait, and, in the meantime, we got connected to a naturopathic doctor who felt we were on the right track to try alternatives. I started on a series of chelation therapy and homeopathic medicines along with large amounts of the AIM products … and no surgery!

Nine years later, however, I had a blockage in my bowel and had immediate surgery to remove a tumor. The surgeon sent samples of this growth to test for cancer.

A few days later, the surgeon told us that the tumor was cancerous and recommended chemotherapy. He referred me to an oncologist, who said his reports showed I was nearing stage-4 prostate cancer and suggested I be a candidate for a new trial of experimental chemo.

That’s when my wife, Muriel, stepped in and stalled for time from any further “medical” moves. Again, my naturopathic doctor treated me naturally and complimented us for taking the AIM products.

I passed the 80-year mark in March of 2018 and still enjoy good health. I continue to take the Garden Trio, AIMega, Frame Essentials, PrepZymes, fit ’n fiber mixed with Herbal Fiberblend, which tastes good, along with a few others.

Now the route that we took to deal with prostate cancer the past 16 years may not be the answer for everybody, but it sure has worked for me.

4 Beet Things Worth Knowing  

1 Beets are a variety of Amaranthaceae, which is the same plant family as Swiss chard. Like chard, beetroot greens can be eaten for an incredibly rich source of nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin. The roots are naturally sweet so some people may wonder whether or not it’s a fruit. But both the greens and root are edible vegetables. It’s the sweetness that may be confusing, especially since beetroot contains more natural sugar than any other vegetable. There are around 9 grams of sugar in one cup of cooked beets. One serving of AIM RediBeets contains only 3 grams of natural sugar from this super nutritious root vegetable.

2 Some people do not appreciate the somewhat earthy taste of beetroot. The source of that particular flavor is an organic compound that occurs naturally in beets:  geosmin. Beets that taste the best have a balance between geosmin and sugar. Interestingly enough, there’s a connection to the smell produced by rainfall on soil because of the presence of geosmin. Human beings have an incredible ability to detect the odor of geosmin in the air when rain falls on earth and disturbs this compound.  In fact, the estimation is that people can detect geosmin in as low a concentration as 5 parts per trillion. By comparison, that would be around one teaspoon of geosmin in 200 Olympic swimming pools. Consider this olfactory sensitivity the next time you get a whiff of rain . . . or a taste of beets.

3 The three main varieties of beets are red, golden and Chioggia.  An Italian heirloom variety, Chioggia beets are named after a town near Venice. This especially sweet beet is aptly nick-named both candy cane and candy stripe beet for its appealing red and white rings when the root is sliced. Golden beets are named for their interior orangey-yellow color. They tend to have an earthier taste and less sweetness than red beets due to the likely dominance of geosmin over sugar. Crimson red to the core, red beets are the most common type to appear on dinner tables, especially as a cooked vegetable or in delectable bowls of borscht soup. Red beets are the variety used to make the juice powder in RediBeets.

 4 Your best bet for understanding the nature of beets is 3 words than begin with bet: betalains, betacyanins and betaine. Betalains are water-soluble plant pigments. One classification is betacyanins, the pigment in red beets. Beetroot extracts containing betalains are used as food coloring in edibles that include soups, sauces, jams, fruit yogurt and ice cream. This distinctive pigment also finds its way into cosmetics and drugs. But beyond the outer use of coloring, betalains provide inner benefits for people from various health properties: anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, cancer-inhibiting and chemo-preventative. The betaine in beets is an amino acid compound that can help break down fatty acids in the liver and help people to recover from liver damage. Betaine may also help the liver to process harmful chemicals, such as carbon tetrachloride and ethanol, and eliminate them from the body.

The more you learn about beets, the more you realize that eating these vegetables and supplementing with RediBeets can support better health.

It’s All about Quality

The evidence is out there: the more plant-based food a person eats, the lower the risk of developing a variety of chronic diseases, which, in turn, leads to a longer life.

But let’s be clear about one thing. Quality counts, so if your diet includes French fries and potato chips, both of which are plant-based, these so-called foods are not going to count as quality choices that reduce your risk of diseases. Refined grains that are usually found in crackers, cookies and cakes are also unhealthy plant-based food.

It’s really not confusing as to what constitutes quality plant-based food. Choose plant foods that haven’t been messed with, altered or packaged. Instead of processed apple slices sealed in plastic with a pretty label decorated with apple illustrations, eat a whole apple. Eat fresh kale, not processed kale chips in a plastic bag with an attractive green, leafy motif. Consuming plant-based food packaged by nature provides quality.

And you don’t necessarily have to eat vegetarian only. From the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Dr. Ambika Satija stated, “For heart health protection, your diet needs to focus on the quality of plant foods, and it’s possible to benefit by reducing your consumption of animal foods without completely eliminating them from your diet.” Even the medical profession is getting and giving a much-needed education.

 The Difference Quality Makes

Study after study shows that consuming more high-quality plant-based food and less meat results in better health.

Mortality (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1999-2010)

Those with a high-quality plant-based diet were 27 percent less likely to die of any cause and 37 percent less likely to die of cancer.

 Coronary Heart Disease (Rotterdam Study):

Eating more plant protein and less animal-derived protein lowers the risk for coronary heart disease.

Consuming more animal protein and less plant protein increases the risk of heart disease.

Arterial Plaque (ELSA- Brazil Cohort Study)

Participants who regularly ate more plant-based protein were nearly 60 percent less likely to develop plaque in their arteries than those who ate more animal-based protein.

Type 2 Diabetes (The Singapore Chinese Health Study)

High intakes of red meat and poultry were associated with a higher risk of type 2 diabetes.

Getting a Nutritional Education

Late August or early September is the time associated with going back to school. Education time. Beyond what is learned from kindergarten through col­lege, parents have the ability to educate their children with an important, long-life lesson: the value of wholesome nutrition. It’s significant because there’s a media marketplace—TV, the internet, smart phones—that sells young people a poor-nutrition road to bad health: fast foods, soft drinks, processed snacks, to name just a few.

Unwholesome Advertising

It’s still an eye-opener to look back at the early days of advertising, when doctors promoted one cigarette brand over another. Have we really come that far since then? Possibly not, when you consider the marketing of so-called food and beverages that study after study show the likelihood for promoting the onset of diseases, such as obesity and diabetes1 as well as cancer2.

Such advertising is still legal and very profitable . . . just not ethical if a company truly cares about the long-term health of consumers and their children. In 2013, Fast Food Facts reported that children and teens remained key audiences by the fast food industry, which spent $4.6 billion to advertise mostly unhealthy products3. Even under all of the marketing pressure, parents can step in and make a difference.

Taste Training

Getting your kids to eat well is a worthwhile task. As a parent, you have the power of providing nutrition, so make choices that create good food habits. For example, introducing a variety of vegetables to young children and “marketing” them in a fun way can shape their taste for healthy foods4.

Independence Day for AIM Members

The month of July holds a couple of “independent” holidays for AIM Members in North America. July 4 is Independence Day in the U.S., and July 1 is Canada Day, which some histories refer to as Canadian Independence Day. The idea of being independent is a desirable state for individuals as well. To not have to rely on something other than your own efforts and resourcefulness to maintain your well-being is a goal worth pursuing.

Looking back over the history of AIM through the eyes of Members, another day of independence has evolved over the years: the day a Member begins taking AIM nutrition. And Members have their own individual dates worth noting.  One of the many results of having your own “independence day” is that the majority of Members who choose to add AIM products to their “health care” program for life become, in a way, their own primary health care providers, who prescribe a healthy lifestyle that includes habits such as eating wholesome food, exercising and getting enough sleep along with supplemental nutrition from AIM.

Choosing this path does not mean that you don’t take medication when necessary. But for the most part, it does mean not having to be a statistic in surveys such as the following published in WebMD online1:

  • 55 percent of Americans regularly take a prescription medicine.  Between 1997 and 2016, the number of prescriptions filled for American adults and children rose 85 percent from 2.4 billion to 4.5 billion a year.
  • Among those who take prescription drugs, 53 percent get them from more than one health care provider.

Let Food Be Thy Medicine 

Hippocrates said it the best by stating that food is the medicine you need to stay healthy. Bees and BarleyLife

We first learned of green barley powder in 1987. Judy suffered from anemia constantly and took iron medication with its associated problems. After six weeks of daily use of this green powder, there was a major change in her blood iron levels.

Then I got the courage to try this “green stuff” myself. Three years previously, I had a major heart episode. After taking these greens for three months, I felt well enough to stop taking all the prescribed heart medication I was on.

When AIM came to Australia, we didn’t have to be convinced; we joined immediately. In 1995, we were were awarded a trip to San Francisco, sponsored by The AIM Companies™. That was a great experience.

Our favorite products are BarleyLife, RediBeets and Just Carrots powders. In October 2016, Judy had a bad fall and broke her upper right arm. We then added CalciAIM to the Garden Trio, and she is doing fine now.

As beekeepers, we learned that if our bees were struggling to find good pollen sources, they would consume BarleyLife. It amazed us how it helps to raise the crude protein level in their bodies.

To get the BarleyLife to the bees, we just sprinkle about 10 grams of the powder in the bottom box where the brood— young developing bees—is located. We do this once a month, and it also helps them in cleaning the hive.

BarleyLife doesn’t improve the actual honey, but it does improve the health of the bees, so they can produce more honey with a lower moisture content. By eating the BarleyLife, the bees are more resilient and able to cope better with environmental stress.

Barley Baby

The nutrition a woman chooses for her herself can have a profound effect on both her health and that of her children. Tanya van der Westhuizen, AIM Director, knows this to be true after experiencing two completely different pregnancies: before and after AIM Nutrition that Works.

After her first child was born prematurely, Tanya found herself constipated, depressed and overweight, while still craving unhealthy food. “I had no idea of what was going on with my hormonal system and body,” she admitted. “And I did not know anything about nutrition or the impact it could have on the development of a baby.”

The health of her firstborn was compromised by a weak immune system. Like Tanya, her little boy suffered from a bad skin condition and had food issues.
