You Snooze You Lose

The definition of snooze is a short, light sleep. It can be considered a luxury to have a snooze in the middle of a work day. The truth is that we live in a world where people often need afternoon naps because they don’t get enough sleep. But if you are only having a snooze at night, you are losing out on 7 – 9 hours of uninterrupted, healthy sleep.

Most people are aware that eating wholesome, natural food and exercising regularly contribute to good health. These good habits are lifestyle choices. Sleep is just as important for your health, and you don’t have a choice. You have to sleep.

The number of hours and quality of sleep you get has a great impact on your state of health just like the amount and quality of food you eat and exercise you get. You can have an ideal diet and exercise routine, but even these good habits will be negatively impacted by sleep deprivation, which is all-too-common in modern society.

Sleep Statistics

According to the The National Sleep Foundation, “50 to 70 million Americans are affected by chronic sleep disorders and intermittent sleep problems that can significantly diminish health, alertness and safety.” In 2017, Statistics Canada reported that “Short sleep duration and poor sleep quality are prevalent among Canadian adults. About one-third sleep fewer hours per night than recommended for optimal physical and mental health.” In fact, Canada ranks third among the world’s most sleep-deprived countries, just one step ahead of the USA in fourth place. Neither of these standings is a source of pride when ranking the worst sleepers in the world!

What Keeps You Awake at Night?

At some point in time, everyone has a poor night of sleep. It’s not fatal. It’s a part of being alive. But when poor sleep becomes a regular occurrence, it’s a nightmare for your daily life in terms of memory, concentration and mood and an increased risk of health problems, including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and weight gain.

A survey of 384 business leaders by the Center for Creative Leadership revealed that two major psychological reasons for sleepless nights are:

  1. Work-Related Stress
  2. Dissatisfaction with Work-Life Balance

Of course there are many other things that can keep people awake at night—shift work, family obligations, financial concerns, depression, sleep apnea, hormone imbalances, etc. Some people even believe that sleeping is a waste of time or that less is more, including some famous folks past and present who didn’t and don’t get enough sleep on purpose.

For most people who lie awake at night, tossing and turning right through the wee hours of the morning, a good sleep is healing. And getting enough sleep on a regular basis provides a number of psychological and physical benefits.

How Many Hours Should You Sleep?

The target of 8 hours of sleep at night is still relevant for most people although it varies according to age. Some people’s sleep patterns are consistent while others are all over the clock. If you are not sleeping well, there are unnatural and natural ways to sleep better.

To Pill or not to Pill

Sleeping pills are the most common remedies, but taking such medications can result in many negative side effects. You really don’t want to depend on any drug to sleep properly because one of the side effects is psychological dependence.
