Clare Zamzow, PhD candidate at Boise State University in Boise, Idaho, is using AIM’s RediBeets in an upcoming clinical trial at the college’s Human Performance Lab. The trial will test the effects of dietary nitrate on trained athletes during wingate trials.
A wingate trial, for those unfamiliar, is similar to riding a stationary bicycle. The experience, however, is much, much different. Prior to the test, the wingate is adjusted to a rider’s body weight. The participant hops on the apparatus and pedals, warming up for thirty seconds. At that point, the test subject is asked to pedal as hard and as fast as he or she can, but then the resistance—which is based on body weight—kicks in. It suddenly feels like you’re running through thick mud, each revolution of the pedal becoming slower and more cumbersome. A thirty-second trial becomes an eternity, a sixty-second trial, a nightmare.
Although the test is unpleasant for the participants, it’s a great way to measure maximum endurance and power output in a short amount of time. Each participant in the study is asked to participate twice in this study, once after drinking RediBeets and once after using a placebo drink. Then at the end of the study, Zamzow will compare the two time trials and look for significant statistical patterns in the data. Participants are also asked to test their dietary nitrate levels with Berkeley Test® Strips.
The AIM Companies™ has provided the RediBeets to the clinical trial. We are excited by the prospect of having our product used in advancement of science. The majority of studies on beet juice have shown positive results, i.e., beet juice improves athletic performance.
