The Road to Happiness Is Paved with…Vegetables?

We live in a fast-paced modern world! We’ve zoomed right past the push-button age directly into a society full of touchscreens, 24-hour news cycles and driverless cars. It’s enough to send anyone into a tizzy, and it has!

You might think that because we live in this far-flung future that there would be some sort of robot to comfort us during times of storm and stress, or, perhaps, a little glowing pill that provides people with a sense of well-being. Not so.  However, there seems to be a good, old-fashioned method of improving one’s mood: A high-vegetable diet, and, according to the latest report, it works fast.

A study published in PLoS ONE indicates that a diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables can improve well-being in a matter of weeks. Researchers gathered together a group of young adults (18-25) and split them into three sub-groups. The first bunch was told to eat normally, the second faction was given vouchers for fruits and veggies and were sent texts that reminded them to use their vouchers and to eat their produce. The third assemblage was just straight up given fruits and vegetables.

Guess which group wound up reporting the greatest sense of well-being after a fortnight? If you guessed group number three, give yourself a smiley-face sticker.  Turns out, group number two used those vouchers to buy produce, but they added those ingredients to casseroles or didn’t eat them raw. They might have even made pies! Pies!

The third group, the happiest group, were more likely to eat their free veggies raw, and this simple modification to their dietary habits contributed to their reported sense of increased overall well-being in only two weeks.  This study just goes to show the raw power that fruits and vegetables can have.
