The metabolic processes of young plants are at peak levels, and the leaves teem with enzymes and nutrients. As a plant ages, it goes into “conservation mode” to protect the survival of the grain head, and because of this, many of the phytonutrients, compounds and enzymes just aren’t in the leaves anymore.   Older plants are larger and produce a higher yield, but they are less nutritionally dense. That’s why we only use juvenile plants for BarleyLife.

Another step we take to guarantee the nutritional density of our product is by harvesting the plants at night. It gets chilly when the sun sets.  When plants are cold, they produce antioxidants and distribute those antioxidants to their leaves.  Harvesting our young barley plants at night helps ensure maximum nutritional yield.

After the leaves are harvested, they are juiced prior to being to concentrated. This process is done quickly and at low temperatures to preserve the important enzymes found in live plants, and it protects BarleyLife against oxidation as well.

Other grass-powder companies sell dried leaf powders rather than juice concentrate powder. Leaf powders aren’t concentrated,  their enzymes are deactivated and leaf powders are harder to digest since nutrients are bound up in the cellulose (It’s why cattle have stomachs and chew their cud to a puree).
