5 Ways to Wellness with the Healthy Cell Concept

When considering what keeps our bodies in good health, we have to zoom in on a microscopic level to get to the source of where wellness begins: our cells. The human body is said to be made of an estimated 37.2 trillion cells, working together amazingly in the miracle of life. Zoom back out and there’s the billions of shapes and sizes we come in. In a way, the commonality of us all having cells as building blocks of our bodies validates the purpose of AIM’s Healthy Cell Concept, comprised of 5 avenues . . . 5 ways to wellness.

1  Food

The 5 avenues of the Healthy Cell Concept begin with an essential foundation: the consumption of whole food. That means avoiding ultra-processed foods, the worldwide popularity of which has unleashed a nutrient-deficient pandemic. Focusing on a primarily plant-based source of whole food has been proven to be best for the human body in reducing the risk of all-cause mortality in a general population. The point of consuming whole, plant-based nutrition as a major part of our dietary intakes is to get the nutrients and phytonutrients that keep the cells of our bodies healthy.

Recommendations

Eat 5 – 7 servings of fruits and vegetables daily.

Aim for 25 – 38 grams of fiber per day, at least 6 – 8 grams of which should be soluble fiber.

2  Exercise

Being physically active on a regular basis is good for our bodies right down to the cellular level, having positive effects on tissues and systems while helping to slow down the aging process. Our bodies go through a natural aging process over time that impairs homeostasis, causing our cells to undergo physiological and functional changes. Exercise counteracts the effects of time. And there are so many different ways to exercise: walking, running, cycling, swimming, yoga, etc. Doing some form of regular physical activity helps to keep our cells and bodies healthy.

Recommendations

Get a minimum of 2½ hours of moderate aerobic exercise or 1¼ hours of vigorous exercise every week or a combination of both broken up in any way.

3  Environment

The external factors that make up our environment have an effect on our well-being. The air we breathe, the water we drink, the products we use, the homes we live in, the places we work and the “things” we’re exposed to all play a part in our well-being. Chemicals, pollen, polluted air, toxic co-workers, impaired waters, etc. can have a negative effect on our lives. The problem is that we may be unable to control all environmental factors. Be aware and make changes wherever possible to ease the impact on the cells that make us whole.

Recommendations

Drink 2 liters of pure water daily.

Select pesticide-free foods.

Choose natural skincare products and natural material for clothing.

4  Protection

Our bodies are exposed to all kinds of pathogenic microorganisms, including harmful bacteria and infectious viruses. Our first line of defense against such attacks is our immune system, which recognizes harmful substances and uses immune cells to eliminate them from our bodies. Oxidative stress impacts the functioning of the immune system, and our bodies produce antioxidants to counteract free radical damage. Dietary intake of antioxidants is essential for adding to this natural defense against the potentially damaging effects of oxidative stress. The other avenues of the Healthy Cell Concept are ways to further protect and support our immune system.

Recommendations

Consume an antioxidant-rich diet of plant-based foods.

Make exercise part of your routine.

Avoid alcohol and tobacco usage.

Outlook is a game changer in all of our lives. How we see the world and react to the good, the bad and the ugly affects how we feel and our attitude toward life. The health benefits of having a positive mental attitude are well-documented. Being able to manage the guaranteed stressors we all face contributes to our well-being. Stress can rob us of mental and physical health, so it is vital for us to get through difficult times without wallowing in them for long. And being able to find humor in most situations is like finding a bridge over troubled waters.
