I am often asked what my secret is to reach the age of 90. Although partly genetics, I believe taking AIM’s green barley powder for over 30 years has contributed to my longevity.
The youngest of four siblings, I was born at home on April 17, 1929, so I grew up during the depression. No one had any money.
Many valuable lessons were learned growing up on a farm during those difficult times. I had good parents who instilled in us a strong work ethic, good manners and Christian values. That strong beginning never left me during the years as I raised my family.
I have three adult children, all married with families of their own. For 31 years, I had a career with the 3M Company in St. Paul, Minneapolis. After retiring, I started a small sewing business, Shirley’s Needle, which helped me through the time I lost my husband from a heart attack at age 70.
As difficult as it was, I moved on with my life, joining the Mayo Legacy in 1998. At one of their meetings, I met the man who would become my second husband. We married in 2003. Sadness struck again when he passed away in August 2014.
Fortunately, I have the support of family and many friends. I keep socially active, going to the YMCA, playing bridge and being involved with my church. I’m also a tap dancer—a senior tap dancing at care centers brings smiles to people’s faces. Last month, I attended my 73rd class reunion!
I will continue taking my tablespoon of BarleyLife in orange juice each morning. God willing, I will reach my 100th birthday.
