CoCoa LeafGreens is the green juice for people who don’t like green juices because it doesn’t taste like green juice. It still is, however, made from some of the healthiest green vegetables around: kale, arugula, Swiss chard, barley grass and broccoli sprouts. As an extra twist, we’ve added three types of cocoa powders to give this product a unique chocolaty taste that can please almost any palate.
Many might believe that the cocoa was added solely to make the greens taste better. That’s not the case. Cocoa is also very healthy. Studies have found that the flavanols in cocoa may help maintain healthy veins and cardiovascular systems, and a new meta-analysis published in the Journal of Nutrition revealed that cocoa flavanols may have greater health potential than previously thought.
Looking at test results from over 1,000 test subjects and 19 randomized trials, scientists looked to characterize “how cocoa flavanols affect cardiometabolic biomarkers.” They found three statistically significant but modest beneficial effects when compared to those who didn’t consume any cocoa.
- The potential to reduce cholesterol
- The potential to reduce insulin resistance
- The potential to reduce inflammation
“We found that cocoa flavanol intake may reduce dyslipidemia (elevated triglycerides), insulin resistance and systemic inflammation, which are all major subclinical risk factors for cardiometabolic diseases.”
–corresponding author Dr. Simin Liu, professor and director of the Center for Global Cardiometabolic Health at Brown University
(Those who ate 200 – 600 mg of cocoa flavanols saw the greatest benefits.)
