Iron and Fitness, The Keys to Good Grades

College marks the beginning of adulthood for many, and big life changes can be really hectic. New students have to learn to navigate the various social, economic and logistical challenges posed by college, and also, they have to deal with the very straightforward, practical challenge at the heart of the matter: passing their courses.

While there is no substitute for good habits like studying nightly and showing up to class (as a former college teacher, I know these things), new research indicates that regular exercise and dietary iron may improve grade point averages by a margin of .034, enough to be the difference between an A or a B, according to a study published in The Journal of Nutrition.

Researchers investigated the dietary habits and fitness levels of 105 female college students with an average GPA of 3.68. The students with the highest stored iron  earned better marks than the “low-iron crowd.” Also, the fitter students scored higher than the less-fit students with lower levels of iron in their systems.

Both iron and fitness have been previously linked to improved cognitive functioning, however, this latest study was used to see if they could find a correlation to grade point average as well. It seems the researchers succeeded.
