Reading books is one of the all-time great pastimes. You can enjoy the same stories that your ancestors pored over hundreds and hundreds of years ago. Books can illuminate the past and help you imagine a brighter future.

However, reading doesn’t always come easy. It takes a lot of practice, and children can struggle with it for various reasons. And it turns out, one of those reasons may be a lack of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, according to a new study out of Sweden published in The Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry.

In the study, the researchers used 154 third-grade students as test subjects, and examined the kids’ reading speed, reading ability and their vocabulary. They split the group into two: one group received a capsule with omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and the other kids were given a placebo.

After three months, those children who were given  omega fatty acids capsules showed greater improved when compared with those taking placebos, and children with mild attention problems exhibited even greater improvements on some of the tests when given omega fatty acids.

The researchers noted that most people don’t get enough omega fatty acids in their diets.
