Gout is known as the disease of kings, but there is little regal about it. It’s a painful arthritic condition that causes swelling, discoloration and discomfort in the joints, feet or big toe. Gout occurs when there is a buildup of monsodium urate crystals. These crystals are the source of the painful inflammation. Genetic conditions, alcohol, toxic lead, foods rich in purines and being overweight are all factors that can contribute to this unfortunate condition.
But now, it seems, there may be a new way to fight gout: dietary fiber! Fiber has long been lauded for its ability to control cholesterol and protect heart health, but a study published in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology found that a diet rich in fiber may curb the inflammation caused by gout.
When we eat fiber, the microorganisms in our guts use that fiber to create materials that have the potential to reduce inflammation. Here’s the scientific explanation in high-dollar words: (from the press release)
Specifically, researchers found that diets high in fiber trigger microorganisms in the gut to produce short chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which induce neutrophil apoptosis and the resolution of inflammation.
The researchers believe this study is a first step towards developing future gout treatments and prevention methods and that it also shines a light on how the body and its beneficial bacteria work in conjunction to curb inflammatory conditions.
