On August 28, 2017, AIM-Sponsored Athlete Alex Garb boarded a direct flight to Nanjing, China, where the 2017 Roller Games were being held. This second opportunity to play in a world championship for Team Canada was uniquely different for Alex. Her husband, Matthew, who plays on the men’s team, was seated next to her on the plane. Alex and Matthew were married in May, the same month that she was offered a goalie position on the women’s inline hockey team.
It was also the first time Alex traveled to Asia, and the contrasts added a bit of sensory overload. “It was organized chaos,” Alex stated, “China is fast paced, there’s so much traffic and a lot of people everywhere. The food was different … lots of dishes I wasn’t used to. I ate mostly at the hotel buffet.”

As for supplemental food, Alex came well prepared to stay healthy and perform optimally in the net. The Results
Team Canada finished in third place, taking home the bronze medal. During the competition, Alex was the backup goaltender, playing in two and a half games that her team won.
“It was hard to watch the USA beat us in the semifinal and go on to win gold,” Alex admitted. “Same for not playing in the bronze medal game that we won against the Czech team. I’d say not playing those big games was really frustrating and made me eager to be the difference maker once I get the chance to start. The coaching staff really encouraged me, saying that my time will come soon. And I’m so grateful that AIM is sponsoring me and providing the nutrition that is helping me to reach my goals.”
